SHIPPING FINANCED AND LEASED VEHICLES A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

Financed and leased vehicles can be shipped just like any other vehicle; however, there are certain restrictions and conditions you should be aware of.  M&M VEHICLE TRANSPORT, a top-rated auto transport company, has vast experience in interstate and intercity car shipping, handling cars with ownership limitations, and to make it easier for our customers, we provide here a complete step-by-step guide on what to do:

RESTRICTIONS

  • Financed and leased vehicles are the property of the bank or the leasing company.  All decisions regarding vehicle relocation are to be made by them.
  • Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Alaska are destinations with some restrictions on shipping a financed or leased vehicle.
  • Financed vehicles have fewer restrictions on being relocated to one of the above destinations than leased cars.
  • Each state has its own rules which can differ from one state to another.

CONDITIONS

You must notify the lessor or the bank about your relocation plans.

  • You must have a good credit history, with payments up to date and on time in order to be considered for relocation permission.
  • The vehicle must have proven insurance coverage.

STEP ONE: READ YOUR CONTRACT

In this document you will find specific usage provisions on misuse, penalties and fees for illegal relocation, shipping policies as well as permitted or restricted states and territories.

STEP TWO: CONTACT YOUR BANK OR LIEN HOLDER

Notify the lienholder or bank of your shipping plans and the reasons for the relocation. Check with them about the rules that apply to the state of your destination. Ask what their policies are if shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Once approval is obtained, request a letter of authorization.

STEP THREE: REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Approval letter from the bank or lienholder, agreeing to the transport of the vehicle and specifying the destination. You will need this document to register your vehicle in the new state or territory.
  • Certification of insurance coverage
  • Vehicle Title
  • Notarized letter from the bank or leasing company for shipping to Puerto Rico
